Symptoms

You have an export file created with the export tool in adTempus 2.x. When you try to import this file into adTempus 3 or later, you receive the following error:

The import file is not valid: An invalid character was found in text content (line 1, column 3).

Cause

This error occurs because adTempus 2.x uses a different export file format than later versions of adTempus, and later versions are not able to read the file.

Resolution

If you are performing an in-place upgrade from adTempus 2.x to a later version, there is not need to export/import your jobs. The software upgrade process will upgrade your adTempus database.

If you need to transfer jobs from a version 2.x installation computer on one computer to a computer running version 3 or later, choose one of the following scenarios:

  • You are installing adTempus on a new computer with no existing jobs, and you want to transfer all of the jobs from the old computer. Follow Solution 1 below.
  • adTempus 3 or later is already installed on the new computer, with some jobs already configured. You need to add some or all jobs from the old computer without losing the jobs already configured on the new computer. Follow Solution 2 below. 

Note: Due to export file size limitations, it may not be possible to retain job history when using solution 2.

Solution 1: Transfer and upgrade database

Note: This option replaces all adTempus data on the new computer with the data from the old computer. It should be used only for a new installation or when you do not need to preserve existing jobs.

  1. Install adTempus on the new computer, creating a new, empty database.
  2. Stop the adTempus service.
  3. On the old computer, stop the adTempus service.
  4. Use the adtdbutil utility to create a backup of the adTempus database.
  5. Copy the database backup file to the new computer.
  6. On the new computer, use the adtdbutil utility to restore the adTempus database from the backup file. The adTempus database on the new computer now contains all of the data from the old computer.
  7. Start the adTempus service on the new computer. adTempus will upgrade the database to the new format. 

Solution 2: Send database to Arcana Development for conversion

If Solution 1 is not feasible for you, create a backup of your adTempus 2.x database using the adtdbutil tool. Submit a support request to request a data conversion and send us your database backup. We will convert the data and send back an export file in the version 3 format.
