Symptoms

During installation, the setup program displays the following error:

Error 1931. The Windows installer service cannot update the system file C:\ WINNT\system32\msvcrt.dll becuase the file is protected by Windows. You may need to update your operating system for this program to work correctly.

If you click OK, the installation may complete successfully, or you may encounter additional errors, such as:

Error 1904.Module C:\Program Files\Common Files\Crystal Decisions\2.0\bin\ ExportModeller?.dll failed to register. HRESULT -2147024769. Contact yor support personnel.

Cause

This error occurs if the msvcrt.dll file is out of date, which can happen if another setup program improperly installed an older version.

Resolution

Reapply the latest service pack for your operating system; this should update your system with the most recent version of the DLL.

If you originally ignored the error and allowed the product installation to complete, after you reapply the operating service pack you should rerun the application setup and choose the "Repair" option when prompted. This will ensure that any problems caused during the original installation by the out of date DLL are corrected.
