Summary
When you attempt to run the Schedule Administrator from its shortcut you see an error similar to the following:
The feature you are trying to use is on a network resource that is unavailable. Click OK to try again or enter an alternate path to a folder containing the installation package 'Arcana scheduler.msi' in the box below.
Canceling this dialog does not resolve the problem.
More Information
This problem is seen on computers running Windows 2000. It has not been observed on NT 4.0 or XP.
Note: reinstalling the software will not resolve the problem. You must allow self-repair to run.
Workaround
This problem occurs because of the Windows Installer self-repair feature. In this case Windows believes that the Arcana Scheduler installation has become corrupted, so it is trying to repair the installation. To do this it needs the original installation files, which are no longer on your computer because the software was installed from a temporary folder that was deleted after installation.
To resolve the problem you must allow the self-repair to run, which requires that the setup files be present. Follow these steps to resolve the problem.
If you originally installed from CD
Insert the CD and specify the path to the CD drive when prompted by the self-repair message. Self-repair will run, and everything will be OK.
If you installed from a downloaded installation file, or no longer have the CD
- Locate the setup distribution file for the version of the Scheduler you are using. For example, "asched2312.exe" for version 2.3.1.2. If this file is not on your computer, download it from www.arcanadev.com/scheduler/download.htm.
- Run the setup program. The first dialog will be a Welcome dialog. Click Next.
- The next dialog you see will depend on what version of the installer you have.
If you are given the choice of whether to remove the setup files after installation
- Choose the second option (do not remove after installation) and make a note of the folder where the files will be extracted.
- Click Next. The files will be unpacked; then you will see another Welcome dialog.
- Cancel the installation at this point.
- Run the Schedule Administrator. When the self-repair dialog appears, prompting you for the location of "arcana scheduler.msi", point it to the folder you noted above.
- Self repair should run and the software will now function properly.
If you are not given the choice of whether to remove the setup files after installation
- You will see a dialog showing the progress as the files are unpacked. Then you will see another Welcome dialog.
- Do not continue the installation from this point, but do not cancel it.
- Open Windows Explorer and go to your TEMP directory (the directory pointed to by the TEMP environment variable).
- Under the TEMP directory you should find a subdirectory with a name similar to "pft9~tmp" that contains "arcana scheduler.msi" and other setup files.
- Copy all of the files and subdirectories from this directory to another directory somewhere. (It does not matter where; put them wherever is convenient.)
- Cancel the installation.
- Run the Schedule Administrator. When the self-repair dialog appears, prompting you for the location of "arcana scheduler.msi", point it to the folder to which you copied the setup files in the previous step.
- Self repair should run and the software will now function properly.
- The setup files should no longer be needed, but you may want to keep them around for a bit in case self-repair kicks in again.
Status
We believe that this is caused by a problem with Windows 2000, which causes Windows to believe (erroneously) that the Arcana Scheduler installation has been corrupted.
